THE proud grandparents of the best footballer on the planet watch him each week on TV from their modest Yangebup home.

Maria-Angela Spinola, 80, and Jose Vivieros, 79, marvel at their grandson and Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo. The retired pensioners live with Ronaldo’s uncle, 44-year-old Alex Vivieros,
in a suburban brick-and-tile house. Mr Vivieros, a cleaner on $20 an hour, said he spent Christmas with the Manchester United superstar. Ronaldo’s mother is Mr Vivieros’ sister.

“People don’t believe me that Cristiano is my nephew,” he told The Sunday Times. “I have to bring them back signed mementos so they take me seriously.”

Ronaldo this week revealed that he had close family in Perth at the launch of a new soccer boot in London when interviewed by The Sunday Times soccer reporter David Davutovic.

The Sunday Times tracked them down yesterday. Ms Spinola said Ronaldo was a good boy who had bought his grandparents tickets to soccer games and had flown them to Europe two years ago.
Ms Spinola, who moved to Perth from Portugal with her husband 10 years ago, said she gets nervous when she watches her grandson on TV. His uncle said Ronaldo’s hectic lifestyle made contact difficult.

“We talk on the phone, but not very often,” he said. “He’s famous and rich and doesn’t have much time.” Mr Vivieros said he remembers his nephew as a three-year-old in Portugal. “He has always loved soccer, but he hates losing,” he said.

The European Footballer of the Year earns almost $38,000 a day and owns a number of expensive cars and properties.

He made the news headlines last month when he wrote off his $448,000 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano Spider in a tunnel near Manchester Airport.

The Portugese-born winger/striker was signed by manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2003 for a fee of $27.42million.

He made his Premier League debut wearing the number seven shirt made famous by the likes of David Beckham, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and George Best. Ronaldo has become a legend at Manchester United with his his speed, step-overs and dazzling dribbles.

Speculation has dragged on for two years that he wants a move away from rainy Manchester to the Spanish capital to play for Real Madrid, but so far a move hasn’t eventuated.

Mr Vivieros said his nephew was “tight-lipped” on the subject. [Source: news.com.au]

The Portuguese has revealed how close he came to wearing the Nerazzurri shirt, and he has insisted that the Red Devils have more chances to progress in the Champions League.
FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show on Tuesday night as Manchester United travelled to San Siro to face Inter in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
Beneamata goalkeeper Julio Cesar had to perform miracles to keep him at bay and ensure the tie will be decided at Old Trafford.
“Julio Cesar truly did great things – his saves were superb,” Ronaldo told the Corriere dello Sport.
“I was impressed by [Davide] Santon; he is a really interesting lad and a great footballer. [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic is a great striker and a reference point for Inter. Our defenders will need to be very focussed to stop him at Old Trafford.
“However, if we will play as well as we did in the first leg, I’m sure we will go through.”
Former Inter midfielder Luis Suarez has recently admitted that Inter kept a close eye on Ronaldo in the past and could have signed him before United pounced in 2003.
“It was a long time ago and I don’t even remember it well,” asserted Ronaldo. “I was 17 or 18 and someone mentioned the possibility of a move to Inter.
“I can’t really recall what they were saying, but we did discuss it. Then Manchester United arrived and I came here.” [Source: Goal.com]

The next time you see Cristiano Ronaldo in Uefa Champions League action, expect him to be faster, quicker off the mark and showing even greater close ball control than before.
The reason? He’ll wear a new pair of boots. Nike’s newest innovation, the Mercurial Vapor Superfly.
The super lightweight boot will be launched on field by two of Nike’s top football athletes, Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, when Manchester United take on Inter Milan in England in their second leg Champions League tie.
Yesterday in Manchester, the boot was officially launched off the pitch and Kickoff.com was there to capture the excitement.
Talking to roughly 100 media representatives from all over the world, the Portuguese star explained that “speed, a good feel for the ball and comfort” are important for him.
While the Mercurial Superfly is lighter than all previous boots in its range, by his own admission Ronaldo says “it’s not the boots that dribble or score the goals, but they do help me a lot” as he tries to stay ahead of defenders.
While discussing the boot at the launch, the world’s best footballer sits comfortably on a couch in a conference room at Old Trafford. The big question with the Red Devils’ upcoming tie with Inter looming is: “Who will have the fastest feet in the new boot, Ronaldo or Zlatan?”
Ronaldo returns: “I’m not into comparisons, but I understand it’s good for the media and for advertising.”
Fortunately Ronaldo, along with other players like Alexandre Pato, Theo Walcott and Didier Drogba, worked very closely with the makers of the boot during the preparation period.
“The athletes give us constant feedback during the time that they train with the boot before it is ready to launch. The boot is made to fit their needs so we have to listen to them and understand what they want,” says the boot’s designer Andre Caine.
“Ronaldo told us that acceleration is key for him. He wanted a boot to help him turn away from defenders quicker and we believe we’ve give him a boot that will help.”
Ronaldo has trained in the boot since October. But very few would’ve noticed because the trial boot is blacked out and not the bright final product you see now. [Source: kickoff.com]
