Bernabeu magic holds the key to a berth in the Champions League quarterfinals

No page has gone unturned leading up to Wednesday’s Real Madrid-Olympique Lyonnais match. All the Whites’ fortes and OL’s weak points have been analyzed. Statistics have been read over once and again and matches gone by have been remembered. But little of it will help once the ball is kicked off. Twenty-two players will do battle for a coveted berth in the Champions League quarterfinals. Another night of magic awaits at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The return leg of the Round of 16 has finally arrived. Almost a month has passed since Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Stade Gerland. But fans, the club and most importantly, the players are convinced the aggregate can be turned around. Manuel Pellegrini hasn’t overlooked a detail, and in order to take care of business called up every healthy Madridista including Castilla’s Pedro Mosquera. Those not available include Benzema, Drenthe, Xabi Alonso and Marcelo. The former two are still recovering from injury, while the latter duo must serve one-match suspensions after being booked in the first leg.

Scoring early is crucial if Los Blancos are to accomplish their goal, but it won’t be an easy task. Olympique Lyonnais haven’t conceded a goal in six straight matches; 620 minutes of shut out action by Hugo Lloris. While OL’s goalkeeper has certainly taken center stage, Claude Puel will have his full squad on hand with the exception of Bastos. Lissandro and Cissokho made the trip to the Spanish capital despite suffering bumps and bruises during their last Ligue 1 match against Boulogne.

The only thing really on Cristiano Ronaldo’s mind during this afternoon’s press conference was Wednesday’s showdown against Olympique Lyonnais.

“Wednesday’s match is do-or-die. We are playing very good football and we have proven that we are the strongest team in La Liga. We are familiar with Lyon. They are a strong team physically speaking, but it’s our turn to play at home.”

“I am convinced that this team will respond and that we will make it through to the next round. I was amazed by the fans on Saturday and I must thank them for their support. I hope we see the same kind of atmosphere on Wednesday because they will play a crucial role in our success. The stadium will be great to see so full and the players are ready.”

“We need to go out there to win and must begin the match thinking that we are going to score. Lyon didn’t concede any goals against us, but I hope Wednesday is a different story. We know it’s hard, but it is possible. We will do everything we can from the very first to very last minute.”

“Everyone knows how bad this club wants to win the Champions League. It has nine titles and wants ten, and this year the final is being played here. I am sure we can turn this tie around. We play at home in front of our fans.”

“I hope our fans are just as supportive on Wednesday. We will do our very best to win. We have to prove to Lyon that we own the Bernabeu.”

Mar 08, 2010 Cristiano Ronaldo was celebrating the magnificent victory against Sevilla with an excellent dinner – and then with a long nap.

At the scene-Basque “Meson Txistu” permitted himself the star of Real Madrid on Saturday after playing some tasty morsels, but after less than an hour, he drove home. Genut it was late, the game did not end until around midnight.
And Ronaldo was obviously exhausted from the chase against Sevilla, his friends, Pepe, Jorge Mendes, and Javier García Coll stayed longer, as the newspaper Marca reported.
A little time for waiting fans had Cristiano anyway, eventually he had his first hit after allowing only 3-2. As usual in Txistu Ronaldo was greeted with standing ovations.
